Information About 140M-C2E-B40

Allen Bradley 140M-C2E-B40 Series C motor protection circuit breaker with trip class 10 (trips in 10 seconds of less), DIN rail mounting, rotary operation and adjusts from 2.5 to 4.0 AMPS. Each motor protection comes with a trip and test indication for a visual confirmation of an overload condition. In addition to the base unit, front and side mounted auxiliary contacts are available along with under voltage trips and through the door operated handles to accommodate all possible applications. When combined with an appropriately sized 100-C series contactor, the 140M-C2E-B40 circuit breaker is listed as a Type F combination motor controller for complete short circuit protection.

The Allen Bradley Motor Protection Circuit Breakers may have 2 cULus Listings – as Manual, Self-Protected Combination Motor Controllers and as Manual Motor Controllers (with optional approvals for Motor Disconnect and Group Installation). When UL/CSA listed as Manual, Self-Protected Combination Motor Controllers, the 140M-C2E-B40 Motor Protection Circuit Breakers provide all of the necessary NEC/CEC requirements for the protection and control of individual Motor Branch Circuits without additional protective devices. At some higher voltages and currents (particularly at 600V), a few of the devices are only UL/CSA Listed as Manual Motor Controllers (with optional approvals for Motor Disconnect and Group Installation). In NEC/CEC Group Installations, these devices must be applied per the appropriate rules which require the use of an upstream Branch-Circuit, Short-Circuit Protective Device (BCPD).

Frequently Asked Questions about 140M-C2E-B40
Question: What is the 140M-C2E-B40?
Date Update:13/06/2025
Answer:

The 140M-C2E-B40 is a magnetic motor starter from Schneider Electric’s TeSys range, which is used for controlling and protecting electric motors in industrial environments. It combines a contactor to switch the motor on and off and a thermal overload relay to protect the motor from overheating caused by excessive current. The 140M-C2E-B40 is rated for a 40A current and is suitable for AC motor control.

Question: What are the specifications for the 140M-C2E-B40?
Date Update:13/06/2025
Answer:

Here are the key specifications for the 140M-C2E-B40 motor starter:

  • Current Rating: 40A.
  • Voltage Rating: Typically 230V to 480V AC (depending on motor voltage).
  • Overload Relay Type: Thermal overload relay for protecting the motor from overcurrent.
  • Coil Voltage: Available in multiple coil voltages, including 24V AC, 120V AC, 230V AC, etc.
  • Number of Poles: 3-pole contactor for 3-phase motor control.
  • Application: Motor control in HVAC systems, pumps, fans, and other industrial automation applications.

Always refer to the product datasheet for detailed technical specifications and voltage/current compatibility.

Question: How do I wire the 140M-C2E-B40 motor starter?
Date Update:13/06/2025
Answer:

Wiring the 140M-C2E-B40 motor starter involves connecting the control and power circuits. Here’s how to wire it:

1. Coil Connections:

  • Connect the control voltage (24V AC, 120V AC, etc.) to the coil terminals (A1 and A2).
  • The coil energizes the contactor, which in turn switches the motor on or off.

2. Power Connections:

  • The L1, L2, and L3 terminals should be connected to the incoming power supply.
  • The T1, T2, and T3 terminals should be connected to the motor for 3-phase AC control.

3. Thermal Overload Relay:

  • The thermal overload relay will have settable current values that need to be adjusted to match the motor's rated current. Adjust the dial on the overload relay to protect the motor from overheating.

4. Grounding:

  • Proper grounding of the motor starter is essential for safe operation. Connect the ground terminal to an appropriate grounding system.

Always refer to the wiring diagram in the product manual for more detailed instructions.

Question: What types of loads can the 140M-C2E-B40 motor starter control?
Date Update:13/06/2025
Answer:

The 140M-C2E-B40 motor starter is designed for controlling AC motors in industrial applications. It is suitable for:

  • Inductive loads, such as 3-phase motors.
  • Resistive loads like heating elements (though the starter is primarily designed for motor control).
  • Common applications include HVAC systems, conveyor belts, pumps, fans, and other automated machinery.
Question: How do I reset the 140M-C2E-B40 after an overload condition?
Date Update:13/06/2025
Answer:

After an overload trip, the 140M-C2E-B40 motor starter can be reset as follows:

  1. Identify the cause of the overload: Check the motor and system for any issues that may have caused the overload condition (e.g., mechanical failure, excessive load).
  2. Check the overload relay: After addressing the cause, manually reset the overload relay (there may be a reset button on the relay itself).
  3. Check the control circuit: Ensure that the control circuit (including the coil voltage) is operating correctly.
  4. Test the motor: Once reset, test the system to ensure the motor is running correctly without tripping the overload relay.

Always ensure that the overload protection is correctly set for the motor to avoid damage.
