Information About 1734-TOP

The 1734-TOP POINT I/O Terminal Base by Allen Bradley is a one-piece base, meaning that its purpose is as a mounting base with an integrated 8-terminal screw-clamp block. It has a wide range of applications in industrial automation because it provides wiring of digital input/output/relay modules, analog input/output modules, and specialty modules. This POINT I/O terminal base can be mounted directly on the DIN-rail, either horizontally or vertically, and will connect distribution of field power-bus as well as backplane communication. The mechanical keying of the terminal base prevents incorrect module placement. While the POINT I/O system implements a No-Tools design, providing a smooth assembly process to set up the I/O module with the terminal base, without using any tools.

A handle, a DIN-rail Locking Screw and Mechanical Keying (both Orange), and a wiring block are the main components of the 1734-TOP terminal base, all kept within dimensions of 49 x 12 x 144 millimeters (1.93 x 0.47 x 5.67 inches) and a weight 63.8 grams (2.25 ounces).

This terminal has a wire size of 0.25 or 2.5 millimeters, (that is 22 to 14 AWG), a screw torque of 0.6 Nm (7 pound- inch), while its supply voltage has a maximum of 300 Volts, its terminal current a maximum of 8A, and a field power bus supply voltage ranging from 28.8 Volts DC to 120 or 240 Volts AC.

To begin installation of the 1734-TOP module, vertically position the base above any existing units (adapter, existing modules or power supply), and slide the base down to allow it to interlock with the terminal’s side pieces and engage the units directly on either side. Finally, press the module firmly down to seat it onto the DIN rail until it snaps into place. Its locking screw should be kept horizontal and in a “locked” position prior to the insertion of an I/O module.

The POINT I/O is grounded through the DIN rail to chassis ground. Use a zinc plated yellow-chromate steel DIN rail to assure proper grounding. The single terminals pins are designated with the numbers 0 to 7 and the connections are determined by the I/O module being used. Any single terminal pin should not have more than 2 conductors wired to it.

The POINT I/O modules that can be used with the Allen-Bradley 1734-TOP terminal base are as follows (with the mechanical keying number in parenthesis): (1) 1734-IB2,1734-IB4, 1734-IB8, 1734-IV2, 1734-IV4, 1734-IV8, 1734-OB2, 1734-OB4, 1734-OB8, 1734-OB2E, 1734-OB4E, 1734-OB8E, 1734-OB2EP, 1734-OV2E, 1734-OV4E, 1734-OV8E; (3) 1734-IE2C, 1734-IE2V; (4) 1734-OE2C, 1734-OE2V; (5) 1734-CTM, 1734-VTM; (7) 1734-OW2, 1734-OW4, 1734-OX2; (8) 1734-IA2, 1734-IA4, 1734-IM2, 1734-IM4, 1734-OA2, 1734-OA4.

Frequently Asked Questions about 1734-TOP
Question: What is the purpose of the 1734-TOP?
Date Update:13/06/2025
Answer:

The 1734-TOP is a terminal base unit used in Allen-Bradley's POINT I/O systems. Its primary function is to provide a mechanical and electrical connection between I/O modules and field wiring. It contains screw terminals for secure wire attachment and ensures proper alignment with the backplane. The terminal base also distributes power and communication between modules. It simplifies modular I/O installation and supports hot-swappable module changes.

Question: What are the module’s dimensions and weight?
Date Update:13/06/2025
Answer:

The 1734-TOP measures approximately 49 x 12 x 144 mm (1.93 x 0.47 x 5.67 inches). It weighs about 63.8 grams (2.25 ounces). This compact design allows high-density installations on DIN rails. Despite its small size, it houses robust terminal connections and mechanical locks. It contributes to a modular, space-saving control system layout.

Question: Is mechanical keying available?
Date Update:13/06/2025
Answer:

Yes, the 1734-TOP includes mechanical keying features to prevent incorrect I/O module installation. Each base has a designated keying position for specific module types. This prevents operator errors during installation or maintenance. The keying is color-coded (orange) for visibility. It enhances system safety and reliability.

Question: What is the maximum terminal current and voltage?
Date Update:13/06/2025
Answer:

The terminals can handle up to 8 A of current. The maximum terminal voltage is 300V. These values are sufficient for most control-level signals and power distribution tasks. Ensure that wiring and connected modules do not exceed these ratings. Overloads may lead to improper operation or damage.

Question: Is the module still in production?
Date Update:13/06/2025
Answer:

Yes, the 1734-TOP is still being actively manufactured by Rockwell Automation. It is a standard part of the POINT I/O product line. Its availability ensures compatibility with modern systems and support for legacy installations. Replacement parts and accessories are widely available. It remains a reliable solution for industrial I/O configurations.
