Product Description P/N: 1746-BTM
Description
The Allen-Bradley 1746-BTM is a Barrel Temperature Control Module designed for the SLC 500 automation platform. It provides four thermocouple analog inputs for closed-loop temperature regulation, optimized specifically for barrel heating applications in processes such as extrusion and molding. Using PID and autotune algorithms executed directly on the module, it delivers independent control for up to four temperature zones. The module is compatible with all SLC 500 processors except the SLC 5/01 and uses the 1746-RT32 connection hardware.

Information About 1746-BTM
The Allen-Bradley 1746-BTM is an intelligent temperature control module tailored for multi-zone processing environments such as plastic extrusion barrels, injection molding, and similar thermal systems. It integrates four independent PID control loops, each using one of the thermocouple inputs as its process variable. The module executes a Tuning-Assisted Process (TAP) algorithm and PID logic internally, offloading computation from the SLC 500 processor. The manipulated variable (M) produced by each loop can be delivered as a numeric value or a time-proportioned output (TPO) signal, enabling seamless integration with digital or analog output modules. This architecture allows the SLC system to execute highly responsive and stable temperature control with minimal ladder logic.
Key Features:
- Auto-tuning for optimized heat/cool loop performance
- Self-diagnostics, including open-thermocouple detection
- Selectable loop alarm configuration
- Configurable responses for thermocouple break conditions
- Barrel control mode selection (heat-only, heat/cool alternating, etc.)
- PID clamping (high/low CV limits) for improved stability
The 1746-BTM provides robust isolation between channels and across the backplane, ensuring reliable operation even in electrically noisy industrial environments. Installation requires a single slot in the SLC 500 chassis, using 1746-RT32 connection hardware. Designed with long-term stability and precision in mind, this module is a key component for temperature-critical industrial processes.
