Information About 1746-P4

The 1746-P4 is an SLC 500 power supply module that provides backplane power to a local chassis, expansion module or a remote I/O chassis. By providing backplane power, the modules attached to chassis slot becomes operable and capable of being recognized by the SLC processor.

This power supply has an input voltage requirement of 85 to 132/ 170 to 250V ac at frequency of 47 to 63 Hz. It is also provided with a 24VDC output that may be used to power external devices. It is not recommended to use this 24VDC output as supply for output modules. Doing so will make troubleshooting difficult to perform even for a single module as the system power supply will have to be shut off first which means the entire SLC 500 controller rack will have to be stopped.

All power supply of the SLC 500 product family features a feature called Hold-up time. Hold-up time refers to the capability of the processor to continue processing logic when the power supply module’s input supply falls below the nominal level. If the power supply continues to experience low voltage level and the hold-up time expires, the processor is stops processing the logic. Normal operation resumes once input voltage returns to normal level.

The specific hold-up time when the 1746-P4 is utilized is 20 ms (full load) 3000 ms (no load). This power supply is UL Listed as Industrial Control Equipment and certified for CSA Certified Process Control Equipment for Class 1, Div 2, Groups A, B, C, D Hazardous Locations.

Frequently Asked Questions about 1746-P4
Question: How does the hold-up time feature work on the 1746-P4?
Date Update:10/06/2025
Answer:

The hold-up time feature allows the SLC 500 processor to continue processing logic even if the input voltage temporarily drops below nominal levels. When the input voltage falls, the module can maintain power to the processor for a short time.

  • Full Load Hold-up Time: 20 milliseconds
  • No Load Hold-up Time: 3000 milliseconds

This feature ensures continuous operation during short voltage fluctuations, enhancing system stability and reliability.

Question: What are the recommended installation practices for the 1746-P4?
Date Update:10/06/2025
Answer:
  • Chassis Location: Install in the leftmost position of the SLC 500 chassis to supply power to all slots.
  • Mounting: Follow Rockwell Automation’s mechanical guidelines for secure mounting.
  • Fuse Protection: Use the recommended 1746-F1 or equivalent fuses.
  • Wiring: Ensure proper AC input voltage is supplied based on the operating voltage range (85-132V AC or 170-250V AC).
  • Ventilation: Maintain adequate spacing to allow proper airflow and cooling.

These practices ensure reliable operation and compliance with safety standards.

Question: Does the 1746-P4 have any certifications for hazardous locations?
Date Update:10/06/2025
Answer:

Yes, the 1746-P4 is UL Listed as Industrial Control Equipment and is CSA Certified for Class 1, Div 2, Groups A, B, C, D hazardous locations. This means it is safe to use in industrial areas where flammable gases or vapors may be present. Users should ensure that installation and maintenance comply with these certifications to maintain safety.

Question: What is the inrush current of the 1746-P4 module, and why is it important?
Date Update:10/06/2025
Answer:

The inrush current of the 1746-P4 is rated at 45 Amps. Inrush current refers to the initial surge of current that occurs when the module is first powered on. This high current is momentary and helps to charge internal capacitors and stabilize the power supply. Users should ensure that upstream protective devices can handle this surge without tripping. Properly rated circuit breakers or fuses are essential for safe operation.

Question: Is the 1746-P4 still in production?
Date Update:10/06/2025
Answer:

No, the 1746-P4 is no longer in production. According to Rockwell Automation, this module was officially discontinued as of September 30, 2024. There is no planned Rockwell Automation replacement product for the 1746-P4 at this time. Customers are encouraged to remove references to this product from their systems and to plan for alternative solutions as needed.
