Information About 1756-RM2

The Allen-Bradley 1756-RM2 is a ControlLogix Redundancy Module. It has enhanced features with speeds of up to 1000 Mbps. When paired with 1756-L7x controllers in both chassis, it gives the best scan performance. For cross loading, the 1756-RM2 uses redundant fiber ports with no single point of failure. During channel switchover, the processing chassis remains synched while the scan time may encounter a delay of around 10 ms. It has enhanced safety features with interference-free diagnostics.

The 1756-RM2 redundancy module draws 1.16 A current at 5.1V DC and 3.4 mA at 24V DC. It has a maximum power dissipation of 6W and a thermal dissipation of 21 BTU/hr. It can be installed in any slot in a ControlLogix chassis. The 1756-RM2 weighs 0.64 lbs. and it has an open enclosure. For communication, it supports up to seven enhanced ControlNet and EtherNet/IP communication modules. For wiring, the 1756-RM2 supports 1756-RMC1, 1756-RMC3 and 1756-RMC10 cable with 1m, 3m and 10m lengths respectively.

The ControlLogix 5560 and ControlLogix 5570 series of controllers support the 1756-RM2 module. The Redundancy Module Configuration tool, RSLinx 2.59.

A variety of synchronization speeds may be enabled depending on the combination of redundancy modules used. Particularly, if used with the same 1756-RM2 module, speed may reach up to 1000 Mbps. If both series A or series B 1756-RM2 are used, speed may reach up to 100 Mbps. Up to 20 ms controller switchover may be achieved with the use of the 1756-RM2 redundancy module.

Unlike the first versions of the redundancy module, the 1756-RM2 only occupies a single slot of any ControlLogix chassis. When implementing redundancy, A pair of redundant racks must be installed with each rack installed with the same controller type and revision. I/O modules, intelligent modules and encompass partner modules cannot be installed in any of the redundant chassis pairs. These modules must be installed on a 3rd or higher order chassis, depending on the supported number of nodes of the communication module used.

The Redundancy module has an integrated fiber optic connector where the controller synchronization is actively happening. This Fiber cable has an LC-Type connector with cable type of 8.5/125 micron single-mode fiber-optic cable. Up to 10 km (10,000 m, 10936.13 yd) of distance can be established between each redundancy module; however, it is ideal that the redundant chassis pair is near each other.

Frequently Asked Questions about 1756-RM2
Question: What is the primary function of the 1756-RM2 module, and how does it enhance system reliability?
Date Update:04/06/2025
Answer:

The Allen-Bradley 1756-RM2 is an Enhanced Redundancy Module designed for ControlLogix systems. Its primary function is to facilitate controller redundancy by pairing with another 1756-RM2 module in a separate ControlLogix chassis. This configuration ensures continuous system operation by allowing seamless switchover to a secondary controller in the event of a primary controller failure. The module achieves this through high-speed synchronization using fiber-optic connections, providing up to 1000 Mbps data transfer rates. This setup minimizes downtime and enhances system reliability in critical industrial applications.

Question: What are the technical specifications of the 1756-RM2 module regarding power consumption and thermal dissipation?
Date Update:04/06/2025
Answer:

The 1756-RM2 module has the following electrical and thermal specifications:

  • Current Draw: 1.16 A at 5.1 VDC; 3.4 mA at 24 VDC
  • Power Dissipation: Maximum of 6 Watts
  • Thermal Dissipation: Approximately 21 BTU/hr

These specifications ensure efficient energy usage and minimal heat generation, making the module suitable for various industrial environments.

Question: Which controllers are compatible with the 1756-RM2 module, and are there any restrictions on module pairing?
Date Update:04/06/2025
Answer:

The 1756-RM2 module is compatible with Allen-Bradley ControlLogix 5560 and 5570 series controllers. When implementing redundancy, it's essential to pair the 1756-RM2 only with another 1756-RM2 module or a 1756-RM2XT module. Mixing with older redundancy modules like 1756-RM/A, 1756-RM/B, or 1756-RMXT is not supported and can lead to system incompatibilities.

Question: What are the installation requirements and environmental specifications for the 1756-RM2 module?
Date Update:04/06/2025
Answer:

The 1756-RM2 module can be installed in any slot of a ControlLogix chassis. It utilizes LC-type fiber-optic connectors and supports 8.5/125 µm single-mode fiber-optic cables, such as the 1756-RMC1 (1 m), 1756-RMC3 (3 m), and 1756-RMC10 (10 m) cables. The module operates within a temperature range of 0°C to 60°C (32°F to 140°F) and has an open enclosure design. Its compact dimensions (approximately 5.51 x 4.41 x 5.71 inches) allow for flexible installation in various industrial settings.

Question: How does the 1756-RM2 module handle controller switchover, and what is the typical switchover time?
Date Update:04/06/2025
Answer:

In the event of a primary controller failure, the 1756-RM2 module facilitates a seamless switchover to the secondary controller. The module's high-speed synchronization ensures that the secondary controller is up-to-date with the primary controller's state, allowing for a rapid transition. The typical controller switchover time is approximately 20 milliseconds, minimizing process disruptions and maintaining system continuity.
