The 1784-PCMC communication cable is included in an Allen-Bradley bundle that comprises the communication cable itself and a PCMCIA communication card.  The 1784-PCMC cable is used to attach the Allen-Bradley PCMCIA card to a laptop or a notebook computer. The 1784-PCMC communication cable communicates through the Data Highway Plus network. The Data Highway Plus network comprises a local area network (LAN) that is designed to provide support for remote programming and messaging between a personal computer and a control module. This is a common communication requirement for factory-floor applications.

The 1784-PCMC cable is easy to implement, and if the proper installation guidelines are followed, the communication process will be simple and effective between PLCs, SLCs, and PCs. A poor connection is the most common cause of failed communication, and technicians should check the connection first when troubleshooting. Occasionally, the system setup will need to be changed to allow the card to work effectively, but ejecting the 1784-PCMC cable without following the recommended procedures may cause damage to the card. This ensures that there is no ongoing communication between the card and the PC to which the card is attached. An error message is always displayed on the screen of the computer if the users attempt to remove the card without following the recommended procedures. The 1784-PCMC cable comes with two wedges. The manufacturer recommends that the two wedges be used to ensure enough strain relief to the cable. These wedges ensure that the cable is securely connected to the computer.
