Information About 1788-CNCHKR

The Allen-Bradley 1788-CNCHKR is a pocket sized, field device used to check the quality of ControlNet network. This tool is ideally used as a commissioning and maintenance tool for evaluating the quality of installation of new and existing ControlNet networks.

The 1788-CNCHKR is capable of checking the quality signal by measuring the characteristics of signal such as Level of distortion, Noise or signal reflections, Rising and falling edges, Minimum message duration, Minimum between-message duration, Peak-to-peak amplitude and Violations to Manchester signal encoding. This tool also features a Node Finder and Oscilloscope output. Node finder is used for detecting a node in the ControlNet network, specified by the user through the built-in Thumbwheel switches. The oscilloscope output is used for providing trigger signal and isolated network signal for displaying messages of specific node in the oscilloscope.

The 1788-1788-CNCHKR is equipped with an array of LEDs supporting 8 bi-color status indicators. LED no. 1-7 are dual-function for diagnostic and bar-graph nodes. Status indicators labeled TRAFFIC may also indicate battery charge status.

The 1788-CNCHKR is powered by a pair of 1.5V AA / LR6 alkaline batteries. When the 1788-CNCHKR is delivered, it is supplied with these batteries uninstalled. Under normal use, the batteries may provide power up to 6 hours of continued use.

The 1788-CNCHKR also has a set of switches used to power, set measuring method, and define the node address being targeted by the ControlNet checker tool. Accessories used with the 1788-CNCHKR includes 3-pin plug connector to fit in the oscilloscope output, BNC T connector and BNC male to BNC female coaxial cable (1 meter long).

This is a hand-held field device powered by batteries (2x1.5V AA). The 1788-CNCHKR NetChecker is designed to help in the troubleshooting and commissioning stages of industrial automation networks that are based on the ControlNet protocol. It is used to validate signal quality on the ControlNet cabling. Note that the device does not read and give conclusions on the content of communication messages, it only evaluates the signal quality through the coaxial cables. Although it does not check message content, it is systematic with signal inspection because it checks signal reflections and noise, rising and falling edge quality and timing, distortion level, Manchester signal encoding violations, minimum message intervals, peak-to-peak amplitude, and the minimum time between messages. If any faults on the network are detected, a piezo buzzer will give an audio indication.

The Allen-Bradley 1788-CNCHKR NetChecker has 8 bi-color (red or green) status indicators on the front. In the upper-right part of the device, the indicator designated as the TRAFFIC indicator shows the network activity and also indicates a low battery condition. In the lower section, the other 7 status indicators are used as bar graph or diagnostic indicators. The device uses batteries, but it also can be supplied with power from an external adapter rated at 5 Volts DC nominal voltage and 0.25 Amps. Batteries usually can withstand 6 hours of continuous device operation. The 1788-CNCHKR NetChecker is designed to operate at 0 to 50 degrees Celsius. Its dimensions are 152 millimeters by 83 millimeters by 33.5 millimeters, and its total weight is 0.25 kilograms.
