Information About 1791-16AC

The 1791-16AC is an Allen-Bradley manufactured Discrete I/O block. This module functions as a complete I/O with built-in functionalities such as Remote I/O adapter mode, communication interface, power supply, Input and output modules. This module is primarily designed for implementing Remote I/O architecture.

The 1791-16AC features an embedded Sixteen (16) Discrete Input channels, with On-state voltage range of 79-132VAC, 47-63 Hz. Each of the embedded input channels exhibit an input signal delay of 1.0 ms for Off to On and 26 ms On to Off transitions. The Sixteen (16) Discrete output channels are in Two (2) groups of 8 with output voltage range of 20-132VAC. The output signal delay is 1.0 ms for Off to On and 8.3 ms @ 60 Hz and 10.0 ms @ 50 Hz for On to Off transition.

The 1791-16AC acts as a Remote I/O adapter. It connects to the main controller through the integrated interface configured as Remote I/O scanner. With Remote I/O protocol, block I/Os, such as the 1791-16AC connects to the communication interface via daisy-chain topology.

Compatible input field devices for use with 1791-16AC are proximity switches, limit switches, selector switches, float switches, pushbutton switches, auxilliary contacts and other binary devices. Compatible output devices include Pilot Lamps, relay coils, horn, buzzer, siren, solenoid actuated devices and other electrical devices.

The 1791-16AC can be mounted in horizontal or vertical orientation. It has a maximum power dissipation of 22.76 Watts and maximum Thermal dissipation of 77.6 BTU/Hr. It has an isolation voltage rating of 500VAC for Power Supply to RIO, 1250VAC for I/O group to I/O group, and 1250VAC for I/O group to Logic.

The output voltage ranges from 20 Volts to 132 Volts AC. Please also check the continuous current necessary for any devices you intend to connect to the 1791-16AC module. There are two types of mounting on this I/O module, vertical and horizontal mounting. The module’s output specifications will vary depending on how you decide to mount this module. A vertical mounting position sustains a higher output current rating because there is more room for air circulation and cooling through the block. With a vertical mounting position, the output current rating is 300 mA at 60 degrees Celsius and 600 mA at 30 degrees Celsius. On horizontal mounting position, the output current rating is 150 mA at 60 degrees Celsius and 300 mA at 30 degrees Celsius.

Frequently Asked Questions about 1791-16AC
Question: What is the 1791-16AC module used for?
Date Update:19/06/2025
Answer:

The 1791-16AC is a block I/O module designed for use in Remote I/O architectures within industrial automation systems. It integrates 16 discrete 120VAC input channels and 16 discrete 120VAC output channels, making it suitable for systems that require both types of signals. The module includes built-in signal conditioning, a communication interface, and its own power supply, which simplifies installation and integration. It can communicate with a PLC or other master device using the Remote I/O protocol in a daisy-chain configuration. This allows for centralized monitoring and control of distributed field devices like sensors and actuators.

Question: What are the isolation ratings of the 1791-16AC?
Date Update:19/06/2025
Answer:

The module features an isolation voltage of 500VAC between the power supply and Remote I/O circuitry. Additionally, it has 1250VAC isolation between I/O groups and between I/O and logic circuits. This level of isolation protects the system from electrical surges and cross-talk, enhancing system robustness. Isolation also allows for safe integration of various devices with different electrical potentials. These protective measures are crucial in industrial settings with high-power equipment.

Question: What types of field devices are compatible with this module?
Date Update:19/06/2025
Answer:

The 1791-16AC is compatible with standard binary input devices like pushbuttons, selector switches, limit switches, and float switches. On the output side, it can drive pilot lamps, relays, horns, solenoids, and other 120VAC actuated equipment. This wide compatibility makes it ideal for traditional automation environments. The AC voltage rating ensures the module can be directly interfaced with industrial-grade devices. This eliminates the need for additional interface relays in many use cases.

Question: What is the delay time for the inputs and outputs?
Date Update:19/06/2025
Answer:

For input signals, the 1791-16AC has an Off-to-On delay of 1.0 ms and an On-to-Off delay of 26 ms. For output signals, the Off-to-On delay is 1.0 ms and the On-to-Off delay varies—8.3 ms at 60 Hz and 10.0 ms at 50 Hz. These delays help filter out signal noise and prevent false triggering due to transient fluctuations. The module is designed to work reliably with standard industrial signal timing. Accurate response times are crucial in automation systems to maintain synchronized and predictable control.

Question: Is the 1791-16AC still in production?
Date Update:19/06/2025
Answer:

The 1791-16AC has been used extensively in legacy Remote I/O systems, but it is considered an older model and is likely no longer in active production. Rockwell Automation recommends reviewing lifecycle status via their Product Compatibility and Download Center (PCDC). While it may still be available through surplus or aftermarket suppliers, users should consider migrating to modern alternatives such as FLEX or POINT I/O systems for enhanced functionality and support. It's advisable to check for last-time buy or migration documents from Allen-Bradley.
