The 1791-16BC is a Discrete I/O block that is manufactured by Allen-Bradley. This module features embedded channels composed of Sixteen (16) 10-30VDC input channels and Sixteen (16) 10-30 VDC output channels. This module is a compact device that is capable of functioning as a single Remote I/O chassis. It has an embedded power supply, communication interface, input and output channels.

1791 Block I/O systems are primarily designed to be used in Remote I/O applications. This component is compatible with different Allen-Bradley controller platforms such as PLC2, PLC3, PLC5, and SLC 5000 product families. Depending on the controller used, Remote I/O baud rate ranges from 57.6K up to 230.4K baud rate. If used with 57.6 baud rate, maximum Remote I/O that can be used is 10,000 cable-feet; 5000 cable-feet for 115.2K and 2500 cable-feet for 230.4 K.

Connect the Block I/O module in daisy-chain topology. This module is always functioning as a Remote I/O adapter. This adapter mode requires a RIO scanner to exchange data with. This module may be installed near the main controller or strategically installed in the plant floor. The 1791-16BC requires an enclosure to protect the device from harmful contaminants and elements present in an industrial environment. These include dust, dirt, grease, oil, water, chemicals and other elements. The enclosure must adhere to the requirements based on the installation area’s classification. The 1791-16BC block I/O has physical dimensions of 6.95H X 4.35W X 3.85D inches. The device has an installation clearance requirement of 2 inches on all sides of the module.

To protect the module, the 1791-16BC block I/O module is internally fused so no external power fusing is required; however, the outputs of the block I/O modules are not fused.

1791-16BC supports horizontal and vertical mounting options each of which has its own output current rating. At 60 degrees Celsius, vertical mounting has a current rating of 500 mA while horizontal mounting has a 250 mA current rating. Low temperatures will increase the current rating. The current rating of vertical mounting will increase to 1 Amp at 30 degrees Celsius while horizontal mounting at 30 degrees Celsius will increase the current to 500 milliamps. The maximum surge current for the1791-16BC is 3 Amps for 50 milliseconds.
