Information About 20-750-S3

The 20-750-S3 module is an integrated safety module that is made for the Allen-Bradley PowerFlex 755/755T series drives. The module supports the safe torque off (STO) function. The 20-750-S3 also provides a networked or hardwired STO function. The networked STO function is provided via an Ethernet cable, and a safety controller issues the STO command which is executed by a connected PowerFlex drive. The STO feature is used to prevent unauthorized motor operation. The STO feature can be used in combination with other safety devices. The 20-750-S3 integrated safety module can be used for mechanical work on an affected machine and it does not provide electrical safety. Because the STO feature does not remove voltage at the drive output, the input power to the drive should be turned off before any maintenance work is performed.

The power to the Allen-Bradley 20-750-S3 PowerFlex 755/755T series integrated safety module has to be provided from a PELV or SELV supply that is rated for 24 Volts DC. The inputs on the module are current sinking inputs. The on-state input voltage range is 11 to 30 Volts DC at 3.5 milliamps. The off-state maximum input voltage rating is 5 Volts DC at 3.5 milliamps. The minimum on-state input current rating is 3.3 milliamps. The maximum off-state current rating is 1.5 milliamps. The recommended conductor size for the 20-750-S3 module is 28 to 18 AWG. Products with a safety function need to be protected against conductive contamination, and 2 methods are available. These protection methods include using a sealed enclosure with minimum protection rating of IP 54 or the provision of an environmentally controlled location that is free of conductive contamination. The 20-750-S3 integrated safety module is UL listed. It is also certified by the CE, C-Tick, and TUV standards.

Frequently Asked Questions about 20-750-S3
Question: What is the 20-750-S3?
Date Update:17/06/2025
Answer:

The Allen-Bradley 20-750-S3 is an integrated safety module designed to enhance the safety functions of PowerFlex 755 and 755T series drives. It provides Safe Torque Off (STO), a critical safety function that ensures the motor does not generate torque, effectively preventing unintended operation during maintenance or emergency stops. This module is especially valuable in applications where operators need to safely work on mechanical systems without the risk of motor activation. It can be integrated into both hardwired and networked safety systems, making it a flexible component in modern industrial automation architectures.

Question: How does the Safe Torque Off function work?
Date Update:17/06/2025
Answer:

The STO function in the 20-750-S3 module is designed to immediately stop the drive from delivering torque to the motor, but without removing power from the drive itself. This is particularly useful during mechanical servicing, where electrical continuity is maintained but motor movement is prevented. STO can be activated through hardwired connections or through a networked signal issued by a safety controller over Ethernet.

Question: How do you connect the 20-750-S3 module?
Date Update:17/06/2025
Answer:
  • Connect a 24V DC power source rated for PELV or SELV to the input terminals
  • Use current-sinking input signals for STO control
  • Configure the system to receive STO commands via Ethernet for networked STO
  • Ensure wiring uses 28 to 18 AWG conductors
  • Verify that both hardwired and networked connections meet your safety system's requirements

Proper connection is critical for safety compliance and functional integrity.

Question: What are the electrical input specifications?
Date Update:17/06/2025
Answer:
  • Input voltage: 24V DC (PELV or SELV compliant)
  • On-state voltage range: 11–30V
  • On-state current: 3.5 mA
  • Off-state maximum current: 1.5 mA
  • Off-state maximum voltage: 5V DC
  • Input type: Current-sinking digital inputs

These values should be carefully matched during system design and setup.

Question: Is the 20-750-S3 suitable for all PowerFlex drives?
Date Update:17/06/2025
Answer:

The 20-750-S3 is specifically designed for compatibility with Allen-Bradley's PowerFlex 755 and 755T drive series. It is not intended for use with other PowerFlex drive families like the 70, 700, or 523/525 series. This ensures that the module is optimized for the STO features of these higher-end drive platforms. When designing or upgrading a drive system, it is crucial to match the safety module with the correct drive series to ensure full functionality and compliance with safety standards.
