Information About 20-COMM-R
The Allen-Bradley 20-COMM-R is a PowerFlex Adjustable Frequency AC drive communication adapter. This adapter is an optional accessory that provides Remote I/O connectivity to any drive it is installed to. By providing Remote I/O (RIO) connectivity, the drive may send and receive control commands over the RIO network.
Remote I/O (RIO) communication is a legacy communication protocol that is used since the introduction of the earlier Allen-Bradley Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) such as the PLC5 controllers. RIO protocol uses the Belden 9463 communication cable and supports daisy-chain topology.
The 20-COMM-R supports communication speed of 57.6 Kbps, 115.2 Kbps, or 230.4 Kbps and draws power from the host drive’s circuitry of 250 mA at 5V DC. It has an operating temperature -10…50 °C (14…122 °F) and storage temperature of -40…85 °C (-40…185 °F) with relative humidity of 5…95% non-condensing. The adapter’s dimension measures 19 mm (0.75 inches) for Height, 86 mm (3.39 inches) for Length and 78.5 mm (3.09 inches) for Width and weighs 85 grams or 30z.
A PowerFlex drive installed with the 20-COMM-R allows the drive to be configured over the network. It may also be directly integrated with Human Machine Interfaces (HMI), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA). It may also receive and send data from and to Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Programmable Automation Controllers (PAC) such as PLC5, SLC500 controllers and Logix controller platform that is installed with Remote I/O module. Parameters of the drive including speed, frequency, current, voltage, diagnostic status and many other parameters can be accessed when successfully integrated using the 20-COMM-R Remote I/O communication adapter.
This adapter has a power consumption of 250 milliamps at 5 Volts DC and it is recommended to be installed in a dry environment without the presence of corrosive chemicals. The Allen-Bradley 20-COMM-R remote I/O adapter is shipped with 2 internal interface cables of 2.54 centimeters and 15.24 centimeters, a 3-pin remote I/O plug, 2 terminal resistors, and 1 adapter installation instructions. In order to use the Allen-Bradley 20-COMM-R remote I/O adapter properly, a communication carrier card is necessary. This adapter supports rack addresses between 00 and 77 octal. Once the Allen-Bradley 20-COMM-R remote I/O adapter is installed and it has received power from the drive, the status light should be green. If the status light is flashing red, the whole process must be revised in order to detect the problem.
