Information About 25-ENC-1

The Allen-Bradley 25-ENC-1 is a quadrature, incremental encoder. This encoder is compatible for use with the PowerFlex 525 adjustable frequency AC drive. This encoder sources 5 or 12 Volts power and accepts 5, 12 or 24 Volts and support single ended of differential input wiring configuration.

The 25-ENC-1 is used for implementing Closed loop PM control via the Closed loop velocity vector control method of PowerFlex 525. This enables additional capability of positioning control, aside from the standard frequency control that affects the speed of rotation of the connected motor. With position control, the motor’s location may also be dictated by the PowerFlex 525 drive.

This encoder may be powered internally by the PowerFlex 525 drive itself aside from powering the device externally. When internally powered, this encoder requires 12VDC nominal supply voltage while actively drawing 250 mA current. This device has an embedded DIP switch to select voltage source. When terminating signal and power wiring to the incremental encoder’s built-in terminal, the maximum appropriate wire size is 2.08 mm2 while the minimum wire size is 0.08 mm2. Tighten each terminal by applying 0.18-0.22 Nm (1.56-1.9 lb-in) amount of Torque.

To install the 25-ENC-1, ensure that power is removed to drive. Apply appropriate lock-out mechanism to prevent the possibility of powering up the drive while installing this module. Additionally, wait for Three (3) minutes before starting the actual installation of the module. Wait until the capacitors discharge to safe voltage level. Locate and remove the control module back cover of the PowerFlex 525 drive. Set the voltage DIP switch of the encoder to assign voltage source, externally or internally. Snap the encoder module to the control module back cover and align it to the locking tab. Once locked and secured, attach the control module back to the PowerFlex 525 drive.
