This series was created for gas or steam turbine management and uses triple-redundant backups to carry out diagnostics. If ever one section of these diagnostics fail, the turbine system continues to run under control of the remaining sections, giving the operator time to repair and put back into service the section with the issue. With this two-out-of-three voting redundancy in place on critical controls, turbine outage rate on the Mark IV is dramatically lower than on previous Speedtronic systems.

The DS3815PAAA1D1A accepts the DS3815PABA as an optional daughterboard. When this board is installed it gives the DS3815PAAA1D1A access to more components, including four switches and four circuits. The two boards communicate via a ribbon cable which connects into a vertical pin male PCB mating connector located toward the center of DS3815PAAA1D1A. Two other connectors are on the board, including one 218A4637P1 five-pin connector, and one 218A4553-1 A/mp connector.

The DS3815PAAA1D1A has one amber and two red light emitting diodes (LEDs.) The board has seven test points, which are labeled “Data,” “Sync,” “Dsync,” “Com,” “Rst,” “Com,” and “Test.” The board also has fourteen jumper switches. One jumper (J6) allows the operator to choose between IN or OUT. Others allow the choice between zero and one.

The DS3815PAAA1D1A is built with twenty-five circuits. This includes HMOS RAM and HMOS microprocessors with on-chip clock generator and system controller, octal buffers and line drivers, and oscillating chips.
