The purpose of the IC697CPU731 CPU is to process the data it receives from as many as 512 inputs and outputs that can be arranged in any mix. It can also support 8000 analog I/O. The microprocessor that this CPU uses is an 80C186 Microprocessor that is rated at 12 Mhz. The data and program memory in the IC697CPU731 CPU can be configured by the users.

The GE Fanuc Series 90-70 IC697CPU731 CPU can be programmed through DOS or Windows-based software to control material handling systems and application processes in real time. It uses the backplane of the PLC that it is part of to communicate with the connected I/O modules and with various smart option modules if the PLC has any. Some of the compatible smart option modules that are available include multiple Communications modules and Coprocessor modules and the IC697 LAN interface modules IC697 discrete and analog I/O modules.
